צדק","marker-color":"#808000"}}],"type":"FeatureCollection"}]</mapframe> בית סוהר דמון הוא בית סוהר השוכן על הר הכרמל. בית הסוהר נבנה על אתרו של יישוב קדום מהתקופה הביזנטית בשם "ח'רבת א-דמון". בחצר הכלא התגלתה רצפת פסיפס, בורות קברים חצובים ושברי עמודים.

היסטוריה

בית סוהר דמון הוקם בשנת 1953 על אדמות שהיו שייכות לחברת "קרמאן, דיק וסלטי" בבעלות משפחת קרמאן – משפחה ערבית מוסלמית מחיפה – במקום שהיו בו מחסני טבק. את בית הסוהר הקימו האסירים עצמם, שעברו מבתי סוהר אחרים, שבהם לא היה מקום. בית סוהר דמון סבל שנים רבות מבעיות תחזוקה ובריחות של אסירים. בדצמבר 1987 נותר בית הסוהר מספר ימים ללא חשמל ומים זורמים.

בשנת 2000 נסגר בשל המצב הירוד בו. לאחר האינתיפאדה השנייה נפתח מחדש. כיום משמש בית הסוהר למאסר ולמעצר של שוהים בלתי חוקיים, אגף אסירות ביטחוניות, וכן אגף של אסירים פליליים העוסקים בתחזוקתו. בית הסוהר עבר שיפוץ מקיף הכולל שדרוג כלל אגפי הכלא, וכן שופר מערך הביטחון ההקפי של בית הסוהר, בבית הסוהר מוחזקים כ-250 אסירים, מרביתם שוהים בלתי חוקיים, והוא בעל רמת ביטחון בינונית.

ב-2 בדצמבר 2010, במהלך השרפה בכרמל, נשרפו יערות מסביב לכלא והוא פונה. כ-37 צוערים של שירות בתי הסוהר נהרגו בעת שהיו בדרך לסייע לפינוי הכלא, כשהאוטובוס שבו נסעו נלכד בלהבות. זו הפעם הראשונה בתולדות ישראל בה פונה כלא שלם מיושביו. על אף שהאש בערה מסביב לבית הכלא הוא לא ניזוק.
